The view across the River
Thames at North Woolwich, looking towards a part of the Woolwich Arsenal
site, still then closed to the public. Although manufacturing had ended
there in 1967, the Ministry of Defence only moved out in 1994. Parts of
the site had earlier been taken over by the GLC to build Thamesmead, where
the first housing was occupied in 1968.
There are still moorings in the river here, but most of the buildings
visible have been demolished and the bank opposite is now lined by blocks
of flats.
