Emslie Horniman (1863-1932), who was the grandson of the founder of Horniman's Tea company and son of the founder of the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill, served for some years on the London County Council and for 4 years as an MP for Chelsea. Realising the lack of any recreational facilities in Kensal Town at the north of Notting Hill, he presented an acre of land on the east side of East Row to the LCC in 1911 and this opened as the public park, Emslie Horniman's Pleasance, in 1914. This walled garden in the Arts and Crafts style was designed for Horniman by C F A Voysey. It was only Grade II listed three years after I made this picture.

Traditionally this park is the start of the Notting Hill Carnival, and the park is the site of the largest and noisiest stage during the event, though when I've visited it the music there has been largely Radio One rather than carnival, and I've not stayed long. More interesting things go on nearby in places like Middle Row and South Row as well as on Kensal Road.
