This part of Meanwhile Gardens still appears rather unfinished, though the gardens were established several years earlier. They were established on derelict land as a community garden, following the vision of artist Jamie McCullough, with only a temporary lease from the council, hence the name 'Meanwhile'. They attracted considerable funding from the GLC and others in the early 1980s, but that dried up. The community organisation was given a 25 year lease on part of the site in 1999, enabling them to gain lottery funding, but there were plans to build 18 canal-side luxury flats and 8 affordable homesat the west end the west of the site which were were succesfully fought.

The housing at right is on Edenham Way, part of the Edenham Estate which was also commissioned by the GLC from Erno Goldfinger along with the Trellick Tower, and which later became known as the Cheltenham Estate. The 11 acre estate, completed between 1969 and 1973, was Grade II listed in 2012. The mixed dwellings and great attention to external and internal detailing make this one of London's outstanding council estates.

Behind me when taking the picture was the Grand Union Canal, and in front across Elkstone Rd the Great Western main line out of Paddington. I've often photographed on the road here during the Notting Hill Carnival as Mas bands wait for their turn to pass the judging platform a short distance ahead on the carnival route.
