A view from the south end of the covered shed. Although there was very little barge traffic in 1981, one of the lighters is very clearly loaded, floating much lower in the water and with tarpaulin over the load.
 
Lighters such as these, belonging to Thames & General Lighterage were made and serviced in Brentford, on Lots Ait. There were over 8000 of them in the 1950s, and over 250 tugs to move them. The yard closed in 1980 but was reopened as John’s Boat Works in 2012
