The Historic Ships collection which included YH89 Yarmouth Steam Drifter 'Lydia Eva', the last surviving steam drifter of the herring fleet which made Great Yarmouth the major herring port in the world in the early 20th century was opened to the public in St Katherine's Dock in May 1979.

Other vessels included RRS Discovery, SS Robin, the Nore lightship, Thames spritsail barge Cambria, topsail schooner Kathleen & May and steam tugs Portwey and Challenge. They all left the dock in various directions by 1986.

At left is the Dickens Inn, a former warehouse moved here to become a pub, and behind the boats is the Ivory House, built in 1858 and restored in 1973, the only original warehouse still in St Katharine Docks

This was a visit made mainly for the benefit of my 5-year-old son, and another picture (not on-line) shows him standing holding the wheel of one of the vessels before we continued on our walk to Wapping.
