The other end of the ferry service at Tilbury in Essex. Over the years there have been several ferries across the Thames around here, but this one really began in 1862 when the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway purchsed rights from other operators to allow any passengers to use the ferry it had operated for its own passengers for ten years. It continued to be a railway service until 1984.

Until 1992 there was a railway station, Tilbury Riverside, at the end of a short spur from the line close to Tilbury Town. The ferry still docks at the Tilbury Riverside pontoon, off Ferry Road, Tilbury, but there is only a bus service from the station. I think the waiting room on the pontoon is now smaller than it was when I made this picture from it.
