The bridge indicated by the sign at right is now on Smuggler's Way, a left turn off Swandon Way. This sign has been replaced and the bridge has apparently shrunk 3". Looking at my 1979 map (OS South London TQ 27/37 1:25 000 Second Series) which I would have been using at the time shows me how different the road layout was then, with traffic from Armoury Way going across Fairfield St and up York Road to the Wandworth Bridge Roundabout. The wall and gasholder were then on the northern part of Fairfield St of which the part shown here was made into Swandon Way and a few yards further north became Smugglers Way.
 
Looking at the gas holder I wonder if some slogan had been painted across it, which has now run in the rain to be illegible. Perhaps someone will remember some advertisement featuring this location
