Liquid Light

US readers will find SE1 available as Luminos Silverprint. Other than Rockland Colloids' well-known Liquid Light, most liquid emulsions including SE1 are made by Kentmere and are very similar.

Silver Gelatin: A User's Guide to Liquid Photographic Emulsions, Marin Reed & Sarah Jones, Working Books, Richmond, UK 1995 ISBN 0924346-1-x - not surprisingly available from Silverprint as well as other sources - is the definitive guide to working with these emulsions.

Melanie Manchot was a technical consultant and also German translator for this book and it features several excellent reproductions of her work as a part of an extensive portfolio section.

German-born Melanie Manchot studied at ICP and New York University before coming to The City University in London and then the RCA. She has taught and lectured in many colleges in this country and in Portugal, and has taken part in numerous exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and at the RFH and the NPG. Her work is held by the Saatchi Gallery.

Workshops by Melanie Manchot are on offer at Photofusion (Sat 17 April - Sun 18 April) and Duckspool (Thu 29 April - Sun 2 May).

A book of her work `Look at you loving me' is coming out later this year.

Volunteers>

Thanks to Michael Crawford-Hick for volunteering to help in supervising the printing of LipService. He has already talked to the printers and we hope that this will show in the reproduction quality of this issue.

Really high quality reproduction is however still beyond our finances, at least until LIP gets a few thousand more members! As in previous issues, the way to see the pictures better - including any colour work in colour - is to use the lip web site. If you do go and look at it on the web, could you please email me while you are there, as I'd like to have an idea how many members are included in the fairly large number reading LipService online.

Contributions

There are still LIP members who have yet to send anythng to LipService. Please don't be shy - let other members know what you are doing or what you think of things. Here are a list of ideas:

Cover Pictures - single pictures with short captions. Need to be portrait format. I'm almost always short of choices for the cover.

Reviews - current shows, particularly those that will still be on when LipService comes out. Any show featuring a LIP member is particularly welcome - I can't review them all. Book reviews - new books or your favourites. Web site reviews. Anything to do with photography. It is wise to check with me before writing reviews as I may already have been promised one of the same show.

Pictures - current work or completed projects etc. Normally 1-3 pages. With or without text.

Something funny - cartoons, text etc. Ages since we had anything like this.

Technical stuff - best to consult me before writing this, as I already have quite a few things on file waiting for a space.

I'm always happy to discuss any ideas you have for the journal - and have often been able to suggest new sources or other helpful advice.

Sending stuff

If you want pictures or other material returned, say so and send a stamped addressed label or envelope. Otherwise I'm quite happy to have pictures presented to the Peter Marshall collection!

Please don't use registered or recorded delivery etc as there is seldom anyone in here when the post arrives, and so this leads to delays and frustration - and material may even get returned to you as undeliverable. Its a good idea in any case to check your material has arrived by phoning me a few days later, and there may be details I'll discuss if you ring but simply take an editorial decision if you don't!

Please type (or word-process) any text of more than a couple of lines. If possible send it on disk with your hardcopy. Printout needs to be good quality ink jet or laser print or typing - not poor photocopies!

The preferred method of sending text is to email it me, petermarshall@cix.co.uk, but pictures are best sent either as actual prints or as scanned files saved as JPG files on PC format disk (or CD-R). Scans should be at least 1400 pixels wide for half page pictures, 1800 pixels for full page (adjust the resolution when scanning to give these figures.) Files should be either 24bit RGB (Millions of colours) or 256 grey shade. Use jpeg at the highest quality that will fit one one on a floppy the disk.

Note to non-members

LipService is the magazine of London Independent Photography, based in London, UK. New members are always welcome. The magazine carries occasional contributions by non-members but these are generally articles of general photographic interest rather than simple portfolios, although they are preferably illustrated by photographs. Any non-members who would like to contribute should email the editor
