This will be a familiar sight for many commuters who go between Waterloo and Waterloo East rail stations, though the windows are usually too dirty to see the view clearly. Back in 1982 they were different windows and I could open them and poke my lens out. You can also see them from the distant end of Platform A.

This area, part of Lambeth Marsh, was first developed in the 1820s by John Roupell a wealthy scrap metal dealer and lead smelter, and his family built up the whole of the Lambeth estate in the following years. The were fortunate the when the railway came in 1848 it only went along the edge of their estate. Built mainly for workers in the local industries, they now sell for silly prices, with a 2-bed terrace in Theed St going for over £2m in 2016. The estate became a conservation area in 1976 and has often been used for filming.
